Opposition to USDA's Egg Irradiation Plan

8/03/2000- United Poultry Concerns (UPC) are urging people to write to the FDA to oppose the irradiation of eggs. UPC, a group "dedicated to the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl", want people to ask that implementation of the new egg irradiation regulation be delayed and that a public hearing be held. Deadline for letter is August 21. UPC feels that irradiation masks primary causes of Salmonella enteritidis in eggs - saying that this process actually impairs the hens immune systems, predisposing them to Salmonella infection.
